The three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday delivered robust box office performance nationwide, with cinemas setting a record for the number of screenings.
According to Chinese movie-ticketing platform Maoyan, the holiday box office totaled 392 million yuan (about $57.8 million) as of June 21, with more than 10.58 million admissions recorded nationwide. Cinemas also held a record 1.44 million screenings, the highest number ever for the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.
Pixar's Toy Story 5 topped the holiday box office with nearly 30 percent of total ticket sales. The animated sequel drew a broad audience, particularly families and younger moviegoers, and performed strongly in major cities.
The Chinese drama Dear You ranked second despite having been in theaters for more than 50 days. The film has continued to attract audiences through positive word of mouth, thanks to its heartfelt story about family ties.
Director Feng Xiaogang's new spy thriller I Know Who You Are placed third, making it the highest-grossing new Chinese release of the holiday.
Rounding out the top five were the action film The Furious and sci-fi romance The Boy Who Counted Cars. Together with the other major releases, the lineup offered audiences a wider range of genres during the holiday period.
