Introduction
Established in 1950 titled as Research Society of Chinese Folk Literature and Arts, China Folk Literature and Arts Association (CFLAA) is a non-governmental organization of professional folk writers and artists from all ethnic groups all over China under the guidance of CPC. Serving as the bridge and bond between CPC and government as well as folk literature and arts circle, CFLAA is considered to be a key element in prospering Socialist literary and art cause and building up a Socialist cultural power. CFLAA is a group member of CFLAC.
CFLAA implements the literary and art guideline policies by CPC and adheres to the people’s orientation in work and creation. While catering for the people at all levels, CFLAA strides with the tide in conducting innovative reforms and making functions in consolidation, guidance, communication, coordination, service and management, self-discipline and rights protection among folk writers and artists. By organizing training, inspiration seeking deep into life, awards and critics, showcase of creation, theoretic exchange, publication, art voluntary service, lawful rights protection and exchange with foreign counterparts, CFLAA is devoted to the
CFLAA currently practices group membership and individual membership simultaneously. Currently CFLAA consists of 32 group members, namely folk literature and arts associations in the 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 4 municipalities, and Folk Literature and Arts Association of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. Besides, CFLAA is blessed with over 10000 individual members at the state level. The supreme authority of CFLAA is the National Congress that elects into its board council. The president and several vice presidents are elected into the Presidium that appoints one secretary-general and several deputy secretaries-general. The National Congress of CFLAA is convened every five years and during its recess the board council implements the approved resolutions by National Congress. During the recess of the board council, the Presidium takes charge of resolutions by National Congress as well as the board council and executive vice president is in charge of daily work of CFLAA. The headquarters of CFLAA is located in Beijing.
Since its establishment, CFLAA has organized teams to explore and sort out various ethnic folk literatures, especially ethnic epics such as Gesar, Manas, and King Yalu; organized multiple trips to collect and protect folk literature, art and customs nationwide; and published Chinese Folklore Collection, Chinese Proverb Collection, Chinese Ballad Collection, and Chinese New Year Wood-block Print Collection. Such projects underway as China Folk Cultural Heritage Rescue Project and Publishing Project of the Chinese Folk Literature Series are an expansion and continuation of previous efforts. CFLAA also undertakes special projects commissioned by the National Social Science Foundation of China such as Thangka Culture Archive of China and Chinese Folk Handicraft Collection and special projects for folk cultural rescue such as Digitization of Chinese Oral Folk Literary Heritage, Survey of Traditional Chinese Villages, and Chinese Paper-cut Collection, as well as themed events such as “Our Festival” Series. In addition, CFLAA has organized China Folk Arts Mountain Flower Awards Contests in 12 sessions and China Folk Arts Festival in 10 editions, both of which have promoted a large number of outstanding folk writers, artists and works of all art forms.
