China's film market sees 1.8 billion yuan haul over National Day holiday
China's film industry saw a highly successful run during the 2025 National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, with total box office receipts, including pre-sales, reaching 1.8 billion yuan (about $253 million) by Wednesday.
Leading the record-breaking slate were the three top-grossing films: the historical epic "The Volunteers: Blood and Peace," "731," and the fantasy sequel "A Writer's Odyssey 2."
The holiday's success was driven by a diverse selection balancing family-friendly blockbusters and personalized genres. Moviegoers enjoyed a wide array of choices, ranging from the historical depth and heroism of "The Volunteers: Blood and Peace" to the heartwarming family comedy "Row to Win" and the visual spectacle of "A Writer's Odyssey 2."
Film success boosts tourism spending
A key takeaway from the 2025 holiday was the powerful synergy between cinema and tourism, transforming viewing traffic into sustained consumption.
Box office hits are significantly boosting tourism at locations featured in films as movie-related tourism takes off in China. Chongqing's Yuzhong District, featured in "A Writer's Odyssey 2," exemplifies this trend, attracting 5.65 million visits and generating over 5.3 billion yuan in spending during the first three days of the holiday.
Similarly, the Hengfeng Film and Television Base in Jiangxi, where scenes for "The Volunteers: Blood and Peace" were shot, saw its daily average visitor flow increase by over 50 percent year-over-year.
To further encourage this consumption, promotions across various provinces allowed moviegoers to receive discounts on scenic spot admission and hotel accommodation simply by presenting their used movie tickets.
