Chinese film 'Dongji Rescue' touches hearts in the UK and Australia
The Chinese-produced World War II film "Dongji Rescue" had its European premiere in London on August 15, marking the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender. Two days earlier, the film debuted in Australia.
"Dongji Rescue" recounts how, in 1942, Chinese fishermen risked their lives to save 384 of over 1,800 British prisoners of war who were aboard the Japanese troop ship Lisbon Maru when it was torpedoed off the coast of Dongji Island in Zhejiang Province.
Audiences were deeply moved by the story's themes of humanity and sacrifice. Some praised the film for portraying the respect that Chinese people hold for human life. Others said it was a timely reminder of the need for cooperation amid the current state of tense rivalry between major world powers.
