From sea to screen: Hainan Island International Film Festival returns

The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIFF) opened in Sanya on Friday, with the theme "From Oceans, with Visions." The opening ceremony captivated audiences with a poetic Chinese-style presentation featuring a series of classic film medleys, mini-musicals and dance performances.
This year's festival has attracted 4,330 entries from 117 countries and regions, competing for the Golden Coconut Awards. A total of 32 finalists were announced on the opening night, including 14 feature films, eight feature documentaries and 10 short films.

The festival also highlights international cultural exchanges, including the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic ties. Activities include a showcase of new French films, a retrospective of movies celebrating Sino-French cultural exchanges and a Spanish Film Week.
French filmmaker Luc Besson chairs the international jury this year. French actress Sophie Marceau serves as the festival's image ambassador, while Chinese actor Ge You takes on the role of New Year ambassador.

More than 100 films will be screened in collaboration with 20 cinemas across Hainan Island. Outdoor film screenings are also being held at scenic spots in Haikou, Sanya, Wanning and Lingshui, offering movie enthusiasts a rich viewing experience paired with cultural activities.
The festival is expected to conclude on December 10, when the winners of the 10 Golden Coconut Awards, including Best Film, Jury Grand Prize and Best Director, will be announced.
